Introduction

Background

J C Watson Mechanical Ltd was commissioned to provide a solution for Westfield Shopping Centre aimed at reducing the facility's carbon footprint and addressing the issue of increasing energy costs. The project focused on replacing existing belt-driven fans in 40No Air Handling Units with new, energy-efficient electronically commutated plug fans.

Objectives

The main goal was to enhance energy efficiency and sustainability at Westfield Shopping Centre through the installation of high-performance RQM Fans with OJ Drives, thereby contributing to significant cost savings and a reduction in carbon emissions.

Methodology

Approach

The Technology partner for this project was selected due to their highly efficient RQM Fans, recognised for their energy-saving potential. Before and after energy readings were taken to document the impact of replacing the old fans with these more efficient models.

Implementation

The project involved decommissioning and recycling the old fans, installing new bulkheads and fitting the RQM Fans. The existing electrical supplies were adapted for the new fans and the BMS Control wiring was remodelled to enable external monitoring. The site was thoroughly cleaned post-installation to ensure a seamless handover to the client.

Results

Achievements

The replacement of the fans led to annual financial savings of over £270,000 for Westfield Shopping Centre. Additionally, the energy savings amounted to 346.08kW annually, underscoring the project's success in enhancing energy efficiency.

Challenges and Solutions

Adjustments were needed to accommodate the new fan installation, including modifications to existing electrical setups and BMS Control wiring. These challenges were met through collaborative planning and execution, ensuring the new system's compatibility and optimal performance.

Impact

Environmental

The project's environmental impact is highlighted by the significant annual reduction of CO2 emissions, equivalent to the energy usage of numerous households. This step towards sustainability demonstrates Westfield Shopping Centre's commitment to reducing its carbon footprint.

The energy savings from the project at Westfield Shopping Centre translate into a significant environmental impact, with an annual reduction of approximately 26.6 tonnes of CO2 emissions. This achievement underscores the project's substantial contribution towards environmental sustainability, highlighting its role in reducing the carbon footprint of commercial operations.

Economic

With the substantial financial savings and reduced operational costs, the project presents a compelling case for the economic benefits of transitioning to more energy-efficient systems. The savings in energy costs contribute to a healthier bottom line and demonstrate the financial viability of investing in green technologies.

Social

The initiative serves as a benchmark for environmental responsibility in the retail sector, showcasing how commercial entities can play a crucial role in sustainability efforts. It sets a precedent for other shopping centres and commercial properties to follow, enhancing the community's overall sustainability profile.

Lessons Learned

Key Takeaways

This case study illustrates the importance of adopting advanced energy-saving technologies in commercial settings. The project not only achieved significant cost and energy savings but also highlighted the potential for additional savings through further analysis and adjustments.

Recommendations

For future projects, it is recommended to conduct comprehensive pre-installation surveys to better anticipate and mitigate potential challenges. Additionally, ongoing monitoring and maintenance are crucial to maximising the efficiency and lifespan of the installed systems.

Conclusion

Summary of Findings

The fan replacement project at Westfield Shopping Centre stands as a testament to the tangible benefits of energy efficiency improvements. By significantly reducing energy consumption and costs, the project contributes to the shopping centre's sustainability and economic goals.

Future Outlook

This case study encourages the continued exploration and implementation of energy-efficient solutions in commercial and retail settings. As technologies advance and awareness of sustainability grows, such initiatives are likely to become increasingly prevalent and impactful.
