Protecting your assets with Co2 temperature controlled systems
Our range of industrial bespoke and eco-friendly CO2 solutions provide a high performance, resilient and long term sustainability to suit any application and budget.
Increasing efficiency demands and stringent environmental legislation are driving an increase in the use of CO2. Modern manufacturing methods have enabled the production of cost effective components capable of operating at the high pressures required for CO2 refrigeration, bringing this product range into the mainstream refrigeration solutions market once again.
Applications include small domestic units, heat pumps, supermarket applications, and, to a lesser extent, industrial applications. Smaller CO2 systems tend to use unitary transcritical systems, whereas larger, commercial and industrial systems are more likely to employ CO2 as a low-temperature refrigerant in cascade systems, together with other refrigerants such as ammonia being used as the high-temperature refrigerant.
Because CO2s index of compression greatly exceeds that of synthetic refrigerants, its discharge temperature (roughly 100 -120°C) is higher than that of traditional HFC refrigerants. Additionally, CO2s higher enthalpy means more of the rejected heat can be reclaimed, therefore making TC CO2 systems more attractive for heat reclaim purposes. CO2 systems still provide usable quantities of recoverable heat even in winter conditions. The reclaimed heat can then be routed to other areas of the operation, such as building HVAC or domestic hot water, improving the system’s efficiency and ROI.
There are notable benefits associated with opting for transcritical CO2. First, when compared to other refrigerants, carbon dioxide is much cheaper to purchase than equivalent traditional refrigerants, keeping capital costs low on large scale equipment.
Unlike synthetic refrigerants such as R134A and R404A, which have Global Warming Potentials of 1400 and 3260, respectively, CO2’s is negligible with a Global Warming Potential of 1. Because of this, CO2 is often referred to as “future proof,” meaning that as legislation continues to evaluate and ban synthetic refrigerants due to environmental reasons, CO2 will remain a viable option for a long time – future proofing your investment.
CONTROL OF YOUR SYSTEMS
With specially designed Pack Controllers for transcritical CO2 applications, JC Watson are experienced in ensuring controllers are fully designed to meet the operational requirements of your applications.
CO2 SAFETY AND PROTECTION
Due to the high pressures that CO2 operates at, JCWM ensures all equipment is factory tested and certified before leaving the factory by Zurich Insurance Inspectors. Once on site and connected to the K65 pipework network, the system is also re-certified by Zurich thus ensuring the safety and integrity of the system. Pressure relief valves are fitted as standard to protect both the system and users.
A leak of CO2 could result in a concentration exceeding the practical limit in an enclosed occupied space such as a cold room, precautions are always taken to prevent asphyxiation. These include the use of permanent leak detection, which activates an alarm in the event of a leak, creating a cascade escape strategy for occupiers to follow.
OUR STANDARDS WILL NOT BE SURPASSED
You can be sure that a system designed and installed by JC Watson Mechanical will be to the highest industry standards ensuring you are compliant with current legislative and good practice requirements. We aim to provide you with the most energy efficient components delivery saving and heat recovery possibilities.
